Let’s talk about SEO for a minute. As a photographer, it’s important to understand that creating an optimized website is one the best things you can do for your business. With the right SEO strategy, your website will become one of your most important organic lead generators for your business. So, let’s take a look at why SEO matters for photographers – and why you should definitely take the time to optimize your site and content!

What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Essentially, it’s the process of telling search engines what your website is about so that it can reach the right people. When you optimize your site, you have a better chance of reaching the people who are looking for businesses like yours. All of it really comes down to making Google happy. You want to show that your site is active. This requires a specific strategy around keywords that will vary depending on where you are and what you do. PS. “Keywords” are simply the words that a potential client would be searching for!
Why SEO matters for photographers?
When your site is optimized correctly, it becomes a lead generator for your business! Your website truly begins to work FOR you. While SEO sounds pretty scary, the truth is that it’s much more manageable than you might think. There’s lots of components that go into a well optimized site, and we’re barely skimming the surface here. Let’s start with 3 tips you can implement today for better SEO as a photographer.
1 | Rename your images with keywords.
Your keywords will vary depending on what you do, but make sure to rename your images (on your blog, in your galleries, anywhere on your site) using your keywords. These images are searchable by Google, so don’t ignore the power of renaming them!
2 | Size your images appropriately.
If your site loads slow, Google will NOT be happy. Remember, Google wants to provide sites that are up to date, active, and user friendly to consumers. By having fast load times, you’re one step ahead of your competitor.
3 | Focus on one keyword per page.
As you build out your website pages, remember to focus on ONE keyword per page, with related keywords throughout the page. If you try to cram everything into one page, Google won’t be happy at all. That’s called “keyword stuffing” and it’s a no-no!
Full Disclosure…
SEO is a long game. It really will make an impact on your business, but like anything worth having or doing, it takes time. Great optimization also takes the right strategy and consistency to see the benefits. But, even these three tips are a great place to start and I encourage you to start implementing them today!
